The suit put Horton on the same side of the court as Hank Williams Jr. That legal education has turned the once-naive country girl into a shrewd tactician. As she sits in her office surrounded by reams of paper and boxes containing papers she and her attorneys have chased through courthouses across the nation, she speaks with a hint of understatement.

Opera Bohemia to stage The Merry Widow in Thurso

The marvellously convoluted comic story can remind one of a Feydeau farce, but its glittering aristocratic settings and the presence of various nationalities are all straight out of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The story revolves around the Merry Widow, Hanna Glawari, who has inherited millions from her late Pontevedrin husband and is now a prime catch for her many aristocratic suitors. To make matters more complex, the Embassy of Pontevedro wants to make sure she marries another Pontevedrin.

Much of the plot involves an inanimate protagonist: a fan.

But some, like Denise Palmer, think of radon as a miracle drug. Crippled with psoriatic arthritis, her hands had become so painful she could no longer pull her clothes on or make dinner. Four days after she and her mother motored out of Edmonton, Alberta, and into Montana, Palmer slowly shuffles through the dampness of the old gold and silver mine in sneakers and a pink jogging suit. She looks happy. For the first time in five months, Palmer says, she can walk unaided, dress herself and enjoy her life.

The cure? Four hours a day for 10 days in the damp mine, inhaling radon gas, drinking and washing with radon-laced water and smearing radon-contaminated mud and moss scraped from the mine’s dank walls onto her aching joints. People come from around the world and pay good money to breathe naturally occurring high levels of the same gas the Environmental Protection Agency calls a leading threat to the nation’s health.

Believers claim this product of the disintegration of uranium is a miracle cure, and they make pilgrimages here for everything from diabetes to cataracts, bone spurs to hemorrhoids, warts to corns. Most come to treat the crippling disease of arthritis. Experts say radon has no effect on arthritis. They say the only relief comes from exercising, applying heat and cold, reducing stress and taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin.

But all the cautionary tales in the world have not kept people away from folk remedies. Few are as unusual as the health mines of southwestern Montana.

Thursday 17 September , h This masterpiece owes its fortune to a series of factors that are reconciled in the course of the operetta and that enhance each other. First of all, the nature of the story brings together in harmony around a single issue the inheritance , a series of classic themes such as money, love, jealousy and loyalty. It is not just about offering a choreographic opportunity accompanied by different types of costumes but through the dance the story evolves and the relationships between the characters are transformed.

The dance also expresses the character of the protagonists and of the situations and describes the evolution of the psychological climate. Because of this prominence of the dance, according to some The Merry Widow is part of the Tanzoperette genre, even though this definition does not consider the actual density of the score which gathers together wonderful melodic pages and an elegant use of the orchestra. Updated: BST, 8 May The simple wedding last Friday was just as Peter Barnes hoped it would be – a register office affair in Wales with his beloved new wife Lidiya, followed by a romantic meal in a local restaurant. In fact, Peter, a widower, considered himself a very lucky man to have found love a second time around after losing his former wife 12 years ago. But two days later, his happiness was shattered – when his brother-in-law arrived at his home with some rather alarming news.

In his hand was a news story from last Saturday’s Daily Mail, and the picture on the page was eerily familiar.

In its biggest tour to date, Opera Bohemia is visiting 18 venues from the Borders to the north coast, as well as a couple of islands. In its first 10 years the company has given performances of fully staged operas all round Scotland, as well as two short tours to England. Opera Bohemia artistic directors and founders Douglas Nairne and Alistair Digges say they can’t quite believe it has been a decade years since they began their mission of bringing live opera around Scotland and giving opportunities to young professional singers and musicians.

We are very grateful to everyone who has helped us along the way and to the various trusts and donors for their financial support. One of Opera Bohemia’s main aims is to introduce opera to first-time opera-goers and a younger generation in a dynamic way.

Here is a light comedy with a rich, tuneful score and plenty of opportunities for dancing. And, in its way, the story, which centers on an attractive widow from a Balkan land, now living in Paris, whose husband left her a fortune, touches on wistful emotions that often well up with the coming of a new year: the byways of romantic attachment, the passing of time, the difficulty of amending lost opportunities. The production was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, who has won five Tony Awards and was also making her Met debut.

Enlivened by sprightly dancing, this colorful production is mostly faithful to the style of the piece. Over all, however, the production came across as tentative, as if Ms. Stroman were struggling to find a balance between respecting the idiom of the work and charging it with fresh theatricality.
